Safe mushroom picking – checklist and risk assessment from an occupational health and safety expert

Published: September 27, 2025 | Author: Bartłomiej Broda

Autumn is in full swing, and that means one thing – the Polish national sport: mushroom picking! The forests are full of enthusiasts with baskets, and social media is flooded with photos of impressive harvests. But in the heat of searching for boletus and bay boletes, do we remember basic safety rules?

As occupational health and safety specialists, we decided to approach the topic methodically. We’ve prepared a simplified occupational risk assessment for the “Forest Picker” position. Consider it a practical checklist that will ensure your forest expeditions are not only fruitful but, above all, safe.

Risk Assessment for the Site: 'Forest Collector' - Checklist

Threat: Mushroom poisoning.

Preventive measures: Only pick mushrooms you’re 100% familiar with. Don’t rely on identification apps—they can be misleading. If in doubt, consult an experienced mushroom picker or take your collection to the nearest sanitary-epidemiological station.

Threat: Ticks and tick-borne diseases.

Preventive measures: Dress appropriately – long pants, closed shoes, and a hat. Use repellents. When you get home, thoroughly inspect your entire body.

Threat: Getting lost in the forest.

Precautions: Fully charge your phone and turn on GPS. Always tell someone where you’re going and when you plan to return. Observe landmarks.

Hazard: Trips, falls, injuries.

Preventive measures: Wear sturdy, high-top shoes that provide ankle support. Watch your step, and be aware of roots, branches, and uneven surfaces. Avoid walking on wet or muddy surfaces.

Threat: Wild animals.

Preventive measures: Remain calm. Do not approach, feed, or provoke any animals you encounter (wild boars, vipers). Give them the opportunity to calmly leave.

Safety isn't just a hobby. It's the foundation of business.

The risk assessment principles we apply in the forest are crucial in every workplace. If you’d like professional advice on safety in your company, we’re here to help.

We hope this checklist will help you enjoy this year’s mushroom season safely. We wish you full baskets and a successful harvest!
